The formula
Points so far = (routine visits × points each) + (evaluations × points each)
Points needed per day = (weekly target − points so far) ÷ days left
Time for the remaining visits uses minutes per visit including the drive, because travel between patients is part of the working day.
Worked example
Twelve routine visits at 1 point and two evaluations at 2 points make 16 points. Against a 25-point week that leaves 9 points over two days, 4.5 a day. The example assumes the remaining points come from routine visits at 1 point each, so that is nine visits. At 70 minutes a visit with the drive, they take 10.5 hours.
Common questions
Who sets the points per visit?
Your agency. Point systems are an employer’s way of weighting visits, so an evaluation usually counts for more than a routine visit. They are not a Medicare rule, and they differ between agencies.
Is drive time paid?
In the US, travel from one patient to the next during the workday counts as hours worked for non-exempt employees. Your normal drive from home to the first patient does not. Check how your agency pays per-visit staff.
Why does the hours figure matter?
A week can hit its points and still run long. If the remaining points take more hours than you have left, the target is not realistic for that week’s visit mix.
