The formula
Break removed (for an unpaid break): treatment minutes ÷ (shift − unpaid break) × 100
Break left in (only right if the break is paid): treatment minutes ÷ shift × 100
You are not paid during an unpaid break, and you are not available to treat.
Worked example
Example: 383 treatment minutes on an eight hour shift with a thirty minute unpaid lunch. With the break removed, 383 ÷ 450 = 85.1%. With it left in, 383 ÷ 480 = 79.8%. The same work reads 5.3 points lower.
Common questions
Which method is correct?
If the break is unpaid, removing it is the defensible method. If it is paid, it belongs in the denominator.
How do I find out which my employer uses?
Take one day where you know your minutes exactly, run both calculations, and see which matches the reported figure.
What if I work through my break?
Then, if the break is still deducted, you are working unpaid, which is a wage and hour question rather than a productivity one. Ask your union, professional association or labor authority.
