    The formula

    Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60

    Hours and minutes: the whole hours are minutes ÷ 60 rounded down; the minutes left over are the remainder.

    Minutes = decimal hours × 60

    Worked example

    383 minutes ÷ 60 = 6.38 hours. As hours and minutes that is 6 hours (360 minutes) and 23 minutes left over: 6h 23m. Going the other way, 7.5 hours × 60 = 450 minutes.

    Common questions

    Why do 6.38 hours and 6h 23m look different?

    They are the same amount of time written two ways. The decimal counts hours in hundredths; hours and minutes counts in sixtieths. 0.38 of an hour is about 23 minutes.

    How do I write 7 hours 45 minutes as a decimal?

    Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7.75 hours.

    Why does the share of an 8-hour day matter?

    It tells you quickly how much of a standard day a block of minutes takes. For a productivity percentage, divide by your paid minutes instead, with any unpaid break taken out.
